Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass bearing flowers and fruit that is found only in the Mediterranean Sea. This seagrass grows extremer slowly, gradually forming vast meadows It plays a vital role in the Mediterranean's sea-beach-dune ecosystem.

The principal functions of the posidonia oceanica meadows are es follows: It fixes CO2 and produces oxygen, as well as protecting sandy coastlines from erosion. The meadows are a reserve for biodiversity due to the large numbers of flora and fauna that live in this habitat, which provides feeding, protection and breeding grounds for young. They also produce much of the sediment that forms part of the sand to be found on our beaches.
