LIFE ADAPTCALAMILLOR: A GOVERNANCE PILOT PROJECT FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION ON THE BALEARIC COAST |
Beaches are essential to defend our coasts from wave energy and its consequences. They are fundamental ecosystems to protect cities and infrastructures built near the sea from storms. |
However, they are being threatened by climate change due to sea level rise, coastal erosion, intensification of storms and loss of biodiversity, along with its associated ecosystem services. These threats have direct repercussions on the loss of dry beach space and, therefore, on coastal tourism activity and the region's economy. |
El LIFE AdaptCalaMillor represents a governance project with the purpose of promoting adaptation to climate change in the beach system and the urban area of the bay of Cala Millor. Its primary objective is to strengthen the resilience of infrastructure, ecosystem services and socioeconomics to the impacts of climate change in the long term. |
This is an ambitious project for the period 2023-2027, which will focus on new science-based methodologies and participatory and governance schemes to improve the understanding of physical processes on an urban beach and anticipate possible changes in its morphology in response to global climate change scenarios. | |
This initiative is part of the European LIFE program, one of the European Union's main financing tools for environmental, nature and climate action projects, with a significant budget allocation of 280 million euros. |
