ACTIONS

LIFE Adapt Cala Millor is an ambitious project that combines science, participation and governance to establish a local adaptation plan to climate change in a territory where the urban beach is an important base of the socioeconomic activity of the area.

Integrating the physical, environmental, socioeconomic and urban dimensions and attending to the needs and social demands of citizens and stakeholders, potential measures for the progressive and long-term adaptation of the bay of Cala Millor to climate change will be selected.

Follow the step-by-step of the performances:

1. Governance: Stakeholder and citizen participation.

2. Assessing the impacts and risks of global change.

3. Assessment and adaptation strategies.

4. Participatory and integrated climate change adaptation project.

5. Sustainability, replicability and exploitation of project results.

6. Communication and dissemination.

GOVERNANCE: STAKEHOLDER AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN CALA MILLOR

It is an active governance process, seeking the effective involvement of society and stakeholders. This participatory approach, aimed at choosing both scientific and flexible measures to adapt Cala Millor to climate change, is deployed at different levels.

The main objectives of the Transfer Project (TP) are clear. First, it seeks the active participation of key stakeholders, encompassing public, private, academic and civil society sectors. This effort extends from the local to the national level, ensuring that management and adaptation decisions in Cala Millor reflect a diversity of perspectives.

At the local level, we will work with the community of Cala Millor. The aim is to raise public awareness of the risks and impacts of climate change, promoting the understanding of measures that contemplate nature-based solutions. This is part of an ongoing dialogue with society, ensuring that their needs and demands are considered at every stage of decision-making.

In addition, validation methods are applied to involve different stakeholders in Cala Millor, in order to establish a replicable governance model for other urban beaches. Expected results include a multidisciplinary Working Group, awareness campaigns, and a society actively involved in the design of adaptation strategies.

This approach aims not only to strengthen the resilience of Cala Millor, but also to lay the groundwork for an effective and sustainable governance model that can be adopted by other coastal communities.

ASSESSMENT OF IMPACTS AND RISKS OF GLOBAL CHANGE IN CALA MILLOR

This action focuses on understanding how climate change, especially sea level rise and changes in marine climate, affects Cala Millor. The objective is to develop a comprehensive and replicable methodology to assess the hazards and risks associated with this urban beach.

In concrete terms, the aim is to identify the scope and implications of these changes on the dynamics of the beach, the natural environment, and urban and socioeconomic systems. This multidisciplinary approach will make it possible to evaluate the possible impacts and risks under different climate scenarios, providing valuable information for the development of adaptation measures.

The expected outcome includes an integrated assessment of climate change risks in Cala Millor, supported by guidelines applicable to other urban beaches. In essence, this work will contribute to understanding and addressing the specific challenges faced by coastal zones in the face of climate transformations.

ASSESSMENT AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES IN CALA MILLOR

This action focuses on assessing and proposing adaptation measures to address the impacts of climate change in Cala Millor. The main objective is the creation of a comprehensive catalog of strategies, evaluated under scientific and sustainable criteria, addressing the challenges in the physical, environmental, socioeconomic and urban dimensions of the beach.

The initial task involves establishing qualitative and quantitative adaptation objectives, derived from the risk analysis conducted in previous packages. Then, specific measures will be identified in each dimension, considering factors such as beach morphodynamics, water quality, habitat restoration and urban planning regulations. The evaluation of these measures will be carried out through an integrated and multidisciplinary analysis, addressing the risk reduction induced by their implementation.

With the analysis of the measures, progress will be made towards integrated adaptation strategies, considering the interrelationship between the dimensions. These strategies will be designed to be viable and effective in the long term, taking into account the synergy between different urban systems and elements. Finally, a comprehensive assessment of the risk reduction associated with each strategy will be carried out, facilitating their choice in the participatory process of the action that follows.

PARTICIPATORY AND INTEGRATED CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION PROJECT FOR CALA MILLOR

Its main objective is the active participation of stakeholders and society in the selection and design of adaptation strategies to climate change in Cala Millor. It seeks to reach science-based agreements for short and long term strategies, integrating applicable solutions and specific urban projects.

The integrated and participatory methodology is developed in two phases. First, a decision analytical methodology for climate change adaptation is established. Subsequently, a participatory methodology will be applied to select and prioritize strategies. This will involve the Cala Millor Working Group and local society through transect walks.

The selection of long-term integrated strategies will be based on a thorough analysis of previous results and will be presented in a participatory manner. This will include the ranking of adaptation projects ready for implementation, which will be evaluated and prioritized in collaboration with stakeholders and society.

The package also includes the preparation of a conceptual plan and preliminary project for the urbanization of the Cala Millor seafront, detailing the works and phases of the long-term development of the project. In addition, construction projects will be prepared for short-term actions, detailing plans, sections and budgets.

In summary, it is expected that solid and consensual agreements on adaptation strategies will be reached, with the delivery of technical documents, urban plans and executive projects that will guide the implementation of measures ready for application.

SUSTAINABILITY, REPLICABILITY, AND EXPLOITATION OF PROJECT RESULTS

This action focuses on ensuring the replicability and sustainability of the Participatory and Integrated Adaptation to Climate Change project in Cala Millor, extending its benefits to regional, national and international levels.

The objectives include scaling up the results to the EU scale, expanding the governance model to other urban beaches in the Balearic Islands and transferring knowledge through European networks. It seeks to develop accessible guidelines for replicating the project methodology in other coastal areas, as well as to establish mechanisms to ensure long-term sustainability.

The expected results include the transfer of experiences at the national level, the motivation of regional actors to replicate the project in other municipalities, international training in adaptation methodologies, and the creation of guidelines as a reference for future projects at the national and European level.

This approach seeks not only to expand the effectiveness of the project in Cala Millor, but also to contribute to the advancement of adaptation strategies at national and international levels.

COMMUNICATION AND DISSEMINATION

This action focuses on the Communication and Dissemination of the LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project, seeking an effective dissemination of its results. The aim is to ensure understanding of the project objectives, increase local participation, and raise awareness of the need for climate change adaptation measures. Communication and dissemination activities, presence in social networks, and an impact at local, regional, national and European level are expected.

The detailed plan covers corporate identity, design of dissemination activities, stakeholder database, and internal communication standards. The development phase involves the presentation of the project in various media, production of dissemination material, street interventions, launch and closing events, media campaign, and networking with other LIFE projects. It also includes scientific and technical communication, with participation in congresses, scientific publications and specialized events.

This integrated approach seeks not only to disseminate results, but also to establish a solid basis for the replication and transfer of project methodologies.
