The counselor of Agriculture, Environment and Territory, Gabriel Company, has presented today the balance of the campaign of the fight against the fires of 2011 of morning, after the past 31 October finished the season of maximum risk. Until today, 157 attempts and forest fires in the Balearic Islands, of which 125 have taken place in Mallorca, 22 in Eivissa and 10 in Menorca (Formentera has been the only island where this year any forest fire has been produced), have been produced. The burned surface|area has arrived at 2.478,83 hectares (1.908,59 has of arbrada surface|area and 570,25 has of disarbrada surface|area) and even though Mallorca has been the island where the majority of fires has been produced, Eivissa is where there has been more affected surface|area, with a total of 1.671,35 it has burned.
The report elaborated by the General Direction of Natural Environment, Environmental Education and Climatic Change of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Territory concludes that 43% of the fires has been intentional, 38% they have been produced for negligences and accidental causes, 6% for natural causes, 2% for reproduction, 1% for unknown causes, 3% for other causes and one 8 % they are pending of research.
According to the Institute|High School Balear of the Nature (Ibanat), he has been one of the most complicated years this year as for fires. As a matter of fact, since|from 1994 -when there was a burned surface|area of 2.454,20 has- it was not produced a figure similar to that of this year. In this sense, it is necessary to highlight the extense institutional col•laboració in the fight against the fires and the immediate answer of the operating one of extinction, which has allowed to reduce the potential of many of the arsons. Thus, according to the simulators of potential of the fire of the Ibanat, the figure of hectares affected in all islands could have been four times superior|upper to 2.478 it has burned.
