The European Commission demands a plan of management|formality to continue fishing this fish through the traditional art used in Mallorca

The General Direction of Rural and Sea Environment and the Balearic Federation of Fraternits of Fishermen|Anglers, together with representatives of the fraternits of Palma, Alcúdia, Andratx, Pollença and Cala Rajada, have agreed today on finishing the season of fishing of the jonquillo after the Commission Eruopea has considered that the traditional fishing tackle used in Mallorca for the capture of this fish is not regularized. The season of fishing of the jonquillo the last month of December, started in Mallorca month in which this small fish turns up, and had to finish at the end of the next month of March, when it|he|she dies after spawning.

The fishing of the jonquillo through minor arts was disregulated by the European Union in January 1995 and for years was out of ordering. With the approval of the Regulation (CE) 1967/2006, of 21 December 2006, related to the measures of management|formality for the sustainable exploitation of the fishing resources|appeals in the Mediterranean sea, the door was opened again to the regulation of these arts through the sol•licitud of exceptions. Thus, the year 2007 the Government of the Balearic Islands started the procedure of sol•licitud that culminated 17/2009, of 6 March, with the approval of the Decree for what settles a plan of management|formality for the fishing with traditional arts of print run|throw in|on the waters of the Balearic Islands.

This plan of management|formality was elaborated by the Service of Fishing Orientation of the Balearic Government that sent it|him last summer to the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Sea Environment, which had to remit it to the European Commission so that it|he|she gave the definite approval. However the plan came off locked in Madrid in the impàs of the change of central Government, so that it|he could not be approved by the European Commission before the beginning of the season of fishing of the jonquillo.

Thus, on day of today, the European Union does not consider regularized this fishing, so that the Government of the Balearic Islands and the fraternits of fishermen|anglers affected they have decided to stop the season. After the formalities carried out from the General Direction of Rural and Sea Environment and thanks to the documentation sent in the course of the different celebrated meetings last week, it is expected that shortly this situation can be solved and that the EU can approve definitively the plan of management|formality of the jonquillo.

The capture of the jonquillo is of capital importance for the fleet of minor arts of Mallorca, since it|he|she ensures an economic|economical income in the winter, a period in which there are not many alternatives, and, moreover, it|he|she allows to rest the fisheries of other spices. The jonquillo (Aphia minuta) is a small fish of cold waters and sandy funds typical of the occidental Mediterranean and of the European Atlantic until the sea of the North and is fished through the jonquillera, an art specific to print run|throw that at present is only used in Mallorca, some zones of Múrcia and the Toscana (Italy). The arts of print run|throw are arts of network|net in the form of bag that characteristics of the arts of trawling and of encirclement combine. They are very selective arts, since more of 95% of what they capture are the objective spices.
