The main objective of the project is to explore the funds exploited for the fisheries of dragging in the area understood|included between His|Her Dragonera, none of Ses Salines and Figuera creek of Santanyí, in order to identify, characterize and map the habitats of special it interis. The agreement of col•laboració establishes that l'Instituto Español de Oceanografía, across the Oceanographic Center of the Balears, the study will carry out and will elaborate the final report with the obtained results and the General Direction of Fishing will facilitate all the information necessary for the study related with the activity of the vessels of fishing of dragging on which they operate to the zone of study (disembarkments, sales, ports-basis of the vessels, etc) and that will be in charge of the diffusion|broadcast and divulging of the results of the project.

This study will complement the information obtained in agreements of former col•laboració between both institutions, as the "follow-up and evaluation of the fishing of dragging of platform in the area understood|included among|between Cala Ratjada, Goatherd and the bay of Palma" (MIDDAY project) and the "integral study of the demersal ecosystem and bentònic of the canal|channel of Menorca and its|his|her|their fishing exploitation" (CANAL|CHANNEL project). These studies, together with information coming from campaigns carried out by the IEO (MEDITS, BALAR, etc), they have allowed to detect that in the soft circalitorals funds of the continental platform of the Balearic Islands there are habitats of great ecological importance, I como the maërl, the funds of crinoids and the funds of red seaweeds soft.

DrangonSal are the concrete objectives of the project: carrying out the mapped one geological-geofísic of the sea background|bottom of the zone of study; characterizing the hydrodynamic conditions of the column of water; carrying out an inventory of the flora and the fauna the most detailed possible to determine the bentònica biodiversity and demersal; carrying out a map detailed bionòmic of the sea benthos, so that the type of background|bottom and the biological community that inhabits it are represented there; identifying and locating the main habitats of interest; making an estimation of the fishing effort (dragging) that is carried out in the area and its|his|her|their impact in the habitats characteristic of the zone. The long-term objective would be the characterization and mapped of the bentònic ecosystem of all the platform of the Islands Baleares, in order to a future protection of its|his|her|their habitats of special interest.

First results

The first campaign of mapped geological is gone he|she|it wears|carries to|in term 5 and 10 November of 2010. A total of 7.964 Hectares, distributed in two zones, were explored: the beach of dragging nearby to Goatherd, known like "The muds of Goatherd" and one zone more in the west, known like "Rich Fishery". In these moments the data collected in order to elaborate the corresponding maps are being interpreted. During 2011 it is foreseen to continue with the geological characterization of the sea background|bottom and to carry out the biological samplings.
