The meridional zone of the Saw of North Wind, the most susceptible according to images of the Japanese satellite ALOS

Most current: 14/12/2011

The counselor of Public Administrations, Simón Gornés, has signed an agreement of collaboration with the director of the Institute|High School Geological and Mining of Spain, Rosa de Vidania, that makes officer the collaboration that it was already carried out on the subject of scientific studies about the geology Balearic and prevention of possible landslides. The inhabitants of the Balearic Isles and the IGME collaborate since the sixties, but this joint work had never been done|made official. The agreement will allow in the Islands, from now, to take part in a European project of research and follow-up of geological movements.

The majority of incidents related with the geology are a consequence of the meteorology. Because of that, as the director of the IGME has remembered, it is necessary to make a follow-up that, as the counselor Simón Gornés has highlighted, translates into more effectiveness in the tasks of landslides prevention, for example. As a matter of fact, only between years 2008 and 2010 there were 45 landslides in the Islands brought about by floods and rains.

The general director of Inside|Inland, Emergencies, Isabel Febrer, it|he|she has remembered it not being strange that phenomena born in these characteristics are produced and has thanked the collaboration of the IGME, remembering every prevention being necessary.

Foreseen performances|actions in Mallorca

The signature of this agreement will allow in the Islands to take part in the European project DORIANS that the IGME develops. It consists of a very scrupulous follow-up, across photos by satellite, of the modifications of some mountainous zones, as the case of the Saw of North Wind is. This study has already brought to light that the zone most susceptible of this area is the one that goes from Andratx as far as Sóller. The Japanese satellite ALOS has detected more movements in the meridional area of the Saw of North Wind than in the zone of the north, probably due to the geological characteristics of each zone. The participation|shareholding in this project opens a great expectation of scientific knowledge on the Saw of North Wind, which the Counselor of Public Administrations, Simón Gornés, expects is of great utility to establish protocols of prevention.

Foreseen performances|actions in Menorca

The signed agreement will allow to continue making a follow-up of the crag of the Port of Maó, one of the zones of the island of Menorca with more geological risk. The IGME and the Government follow the case to evaluate the risks of landslides of the rock and to make the tasks of prevention necessary.

Foreseen performances|actions in the Pitiüses

Geological phenomena there are all over. From the IGME the one happened on 18 September of 2005 to|in the urbanization|housing development has been put of example Him Cubells, in Eivissa, detached of some rains that in a day left more than 150 liters per square meter. In the Pitiüses the follow-up that is made of the movements of earth|lands is the same in order to prevent situations as|like that of the 2005 of them and that leveled several constructions.
